(1) | present | ⟹ | past | |
(2) | past | ⟹ | past/past perfect | |
(3) | present perfectpast perfect | ⟹ | past perfect |
E.g. | (i) | a. | He says, “I feel ill.” | |
b. | He said that he felt ill. | |||
(ii) | a. | They say, “we are losing.” | ||
b. | They said that they were losing. | |||
(iii) | a. | He says, “I haven’t finished.” | ||
b. | He said that he hadn’t finished. | |||
(iv) | a. | Ann says, “I have been crying.” | ||
b. | Ann said that sha had been crying. | |||
(v) | a. | He says, “I will have finished by noon.” | ||
b. | He said that he would have finished by noon. |
(a)随意的 | forget, mention regret, realize, discover, show, notice, is amazed, is concerned, say, report | |
(b)義務的 | know, is aware, think, believe, imagine, figure, dream, wish, hope, assert, allege, insist, quip, snort, whisper, seem, is likely, is possible, is unfortunate, is a fact, is true |
E.g. | John said, "I want to go to home." | |
E.g. | John said that I wanted to go to home. |
E.g. | ‘I wonder’, John said ‘whether I can borrow your bicycle.’ |
a. | say, add, comment, admit, conclude, observe, announce, confess, state, answer, promise, cry (out), argue, declare, protest, assert, exclaim, explain, remark, warn, beg, insist, boast, maintain, reply, wonder, claim, write, report, … | |
|
---|---|---|---|
this/that | ⇒ | that/those | |
here | ⇒ | there | |
now | ⇒ | then | |
today | ⇒ | that day | |
tonight | ⇒ | that night | |
tomorrow | ⇒ | the next/following day | |
yesterday | ⇒ | the day before, the previous day | |
this week/month | ⇒ | that week/month | |
last week/month | ⇒ | the week/month before, the previous week/month | |
next week/month | ⇒ | the following week/month | |
a week/month ago | ⇒ | a week/month before | |
long ago | ⇒ | long before |
E.g. He said that “his father was seriously ill.” | |
E.g. And little Sunshine ... indicated, with a tilt of his head, that yes, the charm would be made. | |
E.g. She asked him why did he not write out his thoughts. |
E.g. | He said, “My father has gone out, but my mother is at home.” | |
He said (that) his father had gone out, but that his mother was at home. | ||
E.g. | She said, “I listened eagerly, for he brought news of my son.” | |
She said that she listened eagerly, for he had brought news of her son. |
33.4.2 yes/no疑問文+等位接続詞+yes/no疑問文
if/whetherを繰り返す。
E.g. | We soothed and comforted her by such words we could find. Did she know where her husband was? Was it possible that we could bring him back to her? | |
A divorce! The word was paralysing. She would pass out of his life, and he would never see her again! | ||
E.g. | I sat on the grass starting at the passers-by. Everybody seemed in a hurry. Why can't I have something to rush to? |
*3:Costa, R.(1972) "Sequences of Tenses in That-clause," CLS 8, 41-51
*4:ほかにwondered, wanted to knowが用いられる。
*5:ask, advise, invite, urge
E.g. “Do have a cup of coffee,” she said to me. She urged me to have a cup of tea.
