   (a) fast, hard, high, late, long, low, near
   (b) fast, loud, quick, slow
   E.g. happy happier/ happiest
     narrow narrower/narrowest
     clever cleverer/cleverest
     useful more useful/most useful
     slowly more slowly/most useful
  • 少数の2音節の形容詞(common, handsome, hollow, polite, lively, quiet, solid, wickedなど)は-er/-estとmore, mostの両方を取る。
   E.g. common commoner/commonest
   more common/most common
   handsome handsomer/handsomest
   more handsome/most handsome
   E.g. wonderful more wonderful/most wonderful
   interesting more interesting/most interesting

E.g. I was more in doubt about it than any of them.

   good*2/well better best
   bad/badly worse worst
   many/much more most
   little less least
   old elder eldest
   older oldest
   late latter last
   later latest
   far further furthest
   farther farthest
26.1.1 old

26.1.2 late

たとえばlast week/month/yearは「先週/先月/昨年」、the last week/monthは「ここ1週間/1か月」の意味で、the last centuryは「前世紀、過去百年間」の意味

26.1.3 far

 farther/farthestは「距離」にfurther/furthestは「距離」にも「程度」にも利用可能である。

   E.g. John is English.
     John is very English.

E.g. The river is as deep as it is wide.
Mary is as clever as Jane is pretty.

E.g. Of course it is not as easy as that.

 劣等比較は通常、「less+原級+than」または「the least+原級+of/in」で表される。

E.g. John is younger than Mary.
John is less old than Mary.

E.g. The more light that falls on the eyes, the more the pupils contract to vertical slits.
The bigger the crime, the more obvious, as a rule, is the motive.

E.g. The road got worse and worse.
We're going more and more slowly.

E.g. Ann is (the) youngest (of all).
E.g. She is a most efficient publisher.
E.g. She works hardest when she's doing something for her family.

    E.g. the upper story
E.g. ×A chimpanzee is a higher animal than a rabbit.

   E.g. the younger generation

E.g. You are most generous kind.

 senior/junior, superior/inferiorを用いて比較表現する。

 「X times as ... as」の形式で用いる。

26.9.3 than (any) other

   (1) She is a better dancer than the other girls.
   (2) She is a better dancer than the boys / than any of the boys.
26.9.4 No (other)...

「No (other) mounstain in Japan ...」

26.9.5 not tallerとno taller
   (1) I am not taller than John. 。
   (2) I am no taller than John.
