グローバル人材になるならば英語くらいはできなければ、とよく言われる。だったら、一流の、本当の英語を学びたいと個人的に思っている。ということで、本当の「大人のための英語」として英文法を学んでいく。ここではそのメモを書いていきたい。

25. 副詞
副詞類（adverbial）は副詞の上位範疇で、副詞の働きをするすべての語句を指す。英語における副詞類には以下がある：
| (1) | 単一副詞 | He spoke slowly and deliberately. | |
| (2) | 副詞句 | John drives very carefully. | |
| (3) | 前置詞句 | We'll stay at a hotel. | |
| (4) | 名詞句 | John lives next door. | |
| (5) | 定型動詞節 | We'll stay where it'll be convenient. | |
| (6) | 非定型動詞節 | Walking across the field, we saw a plane fly past. | |
| (7) | 無動詞節 | Grateful for his help, they thanked him profusely. |
副詞の働きは、主に動詞・形容詞の修飾であるが、他の副詞・名詞・代名詞・句・節を修飾することもある。
25.1 副詞の種類
| (a) | VP副詞 | 動詞句(VP)内の構成素を修飾しVP内またはVPに隣接して生じる。否定文の文頭に生じない。疑問文の焦点になれるが、文副詞・接続副詞はなれない。否定文の焦点になれるが、文副詞・接続副詞はなれない。 | ||

| (b) | 文副詞 | 文全体を修飾する。文副詞はyes/no疑問文の答えになれる。 | ||
| (c) | 接続副詞 | 文と文とを接続する。接続副詞はyes/no疑問文の答えになれない。 |
25.2 「時」の副詞
通常、文末に置く。話題化されたときには文頭に置く。

| Last summer we went to Wales; this summer we're going to Scotland. |
25.3 「頻度」の副詞
以下の3種類に類別できる：
| (1) | +の頻度(語形式) | always, regularly, usually, generally | |
| (2) | -の頻度 | ever, never, seldom, hardly | |
| (3) | +の頻度(句形式) | now and again, once a week |
基本的に(1),(2)は通例、動詞の隣に置き、(3)は文末に置く。しかし以下の場合は例外である：
| (a) | 「(1),(2)+助動詞」 | 助動詞に強勢を置いて文の内容が真であることを強調する。 | |
| E.g. "You should always be polite." "I always am." | |||
| (b) | 「(1),(3)+主語+動詞」 | 文頭の副詞が話題化されるか新情報の焦点である。 | |
| E.g. Occasionally I try to write poetry. | |||
| (c) | 「(2)+助動詞+主語」 | 副詞が新情報の焦点となり、義務的に倒置が生じる。 | |
| E.g. Seldom have I heard such beautiful singing. |
25.3 焦点化の副詞
その右側に来る要素が新情報の焦点であることを表す。
E.g. The accident happened just at this point.

| (b) | 「特に…」 | chiefly, especially, largely, mainly, mostly, notably, particularly, primarily, specifically, at least, in particular |
25.4 VP副詞の併置
一般から特殊へという強い傾向がある。
| (a) | 場所の副詞を等位接続するときは「近+遠」の順序が普通 | |
| E.g. Soldiers were on guard inside and outside. | ||
| (b) | 住所は特殊から一般への順序が普通 | |
| E.g. He lives at number 35, Oxford Street, London. | ||
| (c) | 場所/方向：方向+場所の語順。文頭へ回せるのは場所の副詞 | |
| E.g. In America people move to a new house every few years. | ||
| (d) | 場所/方向と時：通例、時の副詞が後 | |
| E.g. I met him here yesterday. | ||
| (e) | 時と時 | |
| E.g. I’ll meet you at three o’clock tomorrow. | ||
| (f) | 場所/方向+頻度+時 | |
| E.g. He goes to Japan every year NOWADAYS. |
25.5 文副詞
節の外にある副詞で、節内のいかなる要素からも影響を受けない。また以下の特徴をもつ：
| ① | 否定の影響を受けない | |
| E.g. Perhaps he didn't like Mary. | ||
| ② | 選択疑問文の焦点になれない | |
| E.g. × Will he be here perhaps, or will he be here probably? | ||
| ③ | 焦点化の副詞の作用域外にある | |
| E.g. John only phoned Mary, obviously. | ||
| ④ | 上位節に生じる | |
| E.g. Happily, John won the game.= I consider it happy that John won the game. |
25.6 領域副詞
文が叙述される領域を表す。話題または場面設定を表すものと考える。
E.g. Economically, the country is in sharp decline.
25.7 法副詞
命題内容の真偽性に対する話しての確信の度合いを表す。話者の確信度に応じて4種類に区別することができる。

25.8 評価副詞
命題内容が事実であることを前提としてそれに対する話し手の評価を表す。

25.9 発話様式副詞
話し手の発話の仕方を修飾する。

25.10 主語副詞
行為をする際の主語の心的態度を表し動詞句を修飾する。

25.11.3 意味・用法の紛らわしい副詞
| (1) | very, much | ① | veryは形容詞・副詞を前から修飾する。muchは否定文・疑問文において動詞を後から修飾する | |
| ② | 肯定文でmuchを用いたい場合はvery muchとして用いる。ただしprefer, admire, appreciate, regretなどのラテン系動詞はmuchのみをその前に置いて使用可能 | |||
| ③ | veryは形容詞・副詞の原級を修飾し、最上級またはその相当語（first, last, same）を強調可。muchは比較級・最上級を修飾可 | |||
| ④ | 形容詞化した分詞はveryで、動詞性の強い分詞は(very) muchで修飾 | |||
| (2) | already, yet, still | ① | 平叙文では、alreadyは肯定文で「もう…した」の意。yetは否定文で「まだ…していない」の意 | |

25.12 接続副詞
同一文内の2つの語句や文を関係づける副詞を接続副詞という。

接続副詞の中には特定の接続詞と結びつくものがある。
