グローバル人材になるならば英語くらいはできなければ、とよく言われる。だったら、一流の、本当の英語を学びたいと個人的に思っている。ということで、本当の「大人のための英語」として英文法を学んでいく。ここではそのメモを書いていきたい。

23. 形容詞
名詞・代名詞を直接または間接に修飾する語で、通例、比較級・最上級の語形変化がある品詞を形容詞という。
23.1 形容詞の分類
形容詞には、①制限用法(主要語の意味を限定し省略不可)、②非制限用法(主要語の意味を限定せず省略可)がある。
23.2 形容詞の用法
限定用法の形容詞は通例、主要語の「恒常的な特徴」を表す一方で、叙述用法の形容詞は通例、主要語の「一時的な状態」を表す。
(1) | 限定用法 | 修飾する名詞の左側に置かれ、名詞の恒常的な特徴を表す。 E.g. Sally is a pretty girl. | |
(2) | 叙述用法 | 修飾する名詞の右側に置かれ、名詞の一時的な状態を表す。 E.g. This flower is beautiful. / She sat silent. | |
(3) | 目的語補語 | 結果を表すこともある。 E.g. I found the book very interesting. / He pushed the door shut. | |
(4) | 後位用法 | 名詞のあとに置かれると叙述用法であるから、通例その名詞の一時的な状態を示す。 (a)形容詞が前置詞句を伴っている場合:I know a man suitable for the job. (b)-body, -one, -thing, -whereで終わる語を修飾する場合 (c)-able, -ibleで終わる形容詞の場合 |
23.2.1 限定用法のみの形容詞
(1) | 名詞の指示を限定する形容詞 | E.g. the very/same/exact/particular man their main/prime/principal/chief faults | |
(2) | 名詞から派生した形容詞 | E.g. a medical doctor/criminal lawyer | |
(3) | 副詞から派生した形容詞 | E.g. the present chairman | |
(4) | 名詞の意味を強める形容詞 | E.g. a mere child | |
(5) | 既往比較級 | E.g. an elder brother/ the utmost limits of the land |
23.2.2 叙述用法だけの形容詞
(1) | 接頭辞a-を名詞に添えて出来た形容詞 E.g. afloat, alive, asleep | |
(2) | 別の起源のa-を取る形容詞 E.g. afraid, aghast, ashamed | |
(3) | 概して副詞から転用され健康の良否を意味する形容詞 E.g. ill/poorly, unwell/well | |
(4) | その他:exempt, liable, bound, worth, pure and simple |
23.3 限定用法と叙述用法とで意味が異なる形容詞
(1) | a. | He is an able man. | 彼は有能な指導者だ。 |
b. | He is able to speak German. | 彼はドイツ語を話すことができる。 | |
(2) | a. | I heard it from a certain man. | ある人からそれを聞いた。 |
b. | Are you certain of that? | そのことは確かなのか。 | |

b. | He was present at the party. | 彼はそのパーティに出席していた。 | |
(4) | a. | We drove with due care. | 私たちは充分な注意をしながら運転した。 |
b. | He is due to speak this evening. | 彼は今晩講演する予定だ。 | |
(5) | a. | My late father was a music teacher. | 最近亡くなった父は音楽教師だった。 |
b. | Spring was late in coming that year. | その年、春の訪れは遅かった。 | |
(6) | a. | She seems a responsible person. | 彼女は信頼できる人間だ。 |
b. | The person responsible for the accident will be punished. | この事故の責任者は処罰されるだろう。 |

- 上記(e)-(l)の各カテゴリーから1つずつ選んで併置する場合はandも,も不要。

- 上記(e)-(j)の各カテゴリーから1つずつ選び2つ以上併置する場合は,を付けても良い。
E.g. two large(,) oval mirrors
- 同一カテゴリーから2つ以上の形容詞を選ぶ場合は、義務的に,を付ける。
E.g. You stupid, unthinkable, irresponsible, reckless idiot!
