7.　半過去形

7.1　半過去形の作り方

　半過去は継続している条件や反復、未完了な過去の行動を表現するのに用いる。半過去の語幹に半過去特有の語尾を付与することで構成される。語幹は現在形の1人称複数形から語尾の-onsを除くことで得られる。半過去の語尾は-ais,-ais,-ait,-ions,-irez,-aientである。

3人称	il/elle/on	parlait	ils/elles	parlaient

　mangerやcommencerのように現在形の1人称複数形で語幹の綴りに変化が生じる動詞では半過去形の語尾の直前に同一の綴りの変化が生じる。

3人称	il/elle/on	mangeait	ils/elles	mangeaient

1人称	je	commençais	nous	commencions
2人称	tu	commençais	vous	commenciez
3人称	il/elle/on	commençait	ils/elles	commençaient

　語幹が-iで終わる動詞では1人称複数および2人称複数においてiを二重にする。
　　　　E.g. nous étudiions
　　　　　　vous étudiiez

　êtreを除きすべての動詞が上記の規則的変化をする：

	単数		複数
1人称	je	éais	nous	éions
2人称	tu	éais	vous	éiez
3人称	il/elle/on	éait	ils/elles	éaient

7.2　半過去の利用方法

　半過去形は過去の行動や条件を既に完了した出来事としてよりむしろ過程として注目する。その始点や終点というよりも行動や条件自体を強調する。以上のように、半過去形の用法の1つは過去の反復や継続している行動を表すことである。

	Qu'est-que tu faisais quand tu habitais à Cannes ?
	=what did* you use to do when you lived in Cannes?*
	J'allais tous les jours à la plage.
	=I would go* to the beach every day.*
	Est-ce que tu avais des cours l'après-midi ?
	=Did* you use to have classes in the afternoon?*
	Non, j'étais à la faculté le matin. L'après-midi j'allais au travail.
	=No, I used to be* at the university in the morning. In the afternoon, I used to go to work.*

半過去形はまた過去時点におけるモノや人、状況を描写するのに用いる。

例：

Mes amis étaient tous diligents. Ils étudiaient sérieusement et s'intéressaient à leur travail. Mais ils savaient s'amuser aussi. Ils étaient tous très gentils et les professeurs du lycée les trouvaient sympathiques et intelligents.

(My friends were all diligent. They studied seriously and took an interest in their work. But they knew how to have a good time too. They were all very nice and the high school teachers found them pleasant and intelligent.)

半過去に対して、複合過去は過去の特定の瞬間において始まり完結した特定の行動や出来事を表現する。

	J'ai pris le petit déjeuner, j'ai mis mon manteau et je suis sorti.
	=I had* breakfast, put on my coat, and left the house.*

半過去と複合過去は同一の文章内に現れる場合がある。半過去は複合過去に置いて言及された出来事における背景を述べる。そうした事例では、半過去は時間や天候、もしくはもう1つの出来事が起こった時に継続していたある行動を描写する。

	Il était 7 heures et demie quand elle est rentrée.
	=It was* 7:30 when she returned home.*
	Quand on est sortis du restaurant, il pleuvait.
	=When we left* the restaurant, it was raining.*
	Je lisais quand Jacques a frappé à la porte.
	=I was reading* when Jacques knocked at the door.*

7.3　半過去の他の用法

　半過去形は過去に始まり、別の過去の出来事が生じた際には未だに継続している行動を描写するために時間表現と共に用いられる。生じた出来事自体は複合過去形で表す。

Combien de temps y avait-il que vous habitiez à Paris quand on vous a offert le poste à Perpignan ?

Depuis combien de temps habitiez-vous à Paris quand on vous a offert le poste à Perpignan ?

　=How long had you been living in Paris when you were offered the position in Perpignan?

Il y avait dix ans que j'étais à Paris quand je suis parti pour Perpignan.

J'étais à Paris depuis dix ans quand je suis parti pour Perpignan.

　=I had been in Paris for ten years when I left for Perpignan.

なお時間表現の前で用いられるフレーズもまた半過去形で表す。略式的なスタイルでは、倒置がest-ce queなどに置き換えられる。

　 $\mathrm{Si}$ に半過去形を用いた場合、英語で言う「How about...?」ないし「What if ...?」に等しい提案の表現になる。これは特に $\mathrm{nous}$ ないし $\mathrm{on}$ と共起するのが普通である。 $\mathrm{tu}$ ないし $\mathrm{vous}$ と共起した場合、焦りや苛立ちを表現する。

	Si nous sortions ?	=How about going out?
	Si on partait déjà ?	=What if* we leave now?*
	―Si nous nous dépêchions un peu ?	=How about if* we hurry up?*
	―Et si tu te taisais ?	=And how about if* you keep quiet?*

7.4　特定の動詞の特殊な意味

　一部の頻用動詞では半過去形と複合過去形で異なる意味を持つ。

savoir	Il savait l'addresse.	=He knew* the address.*
	Il a su l'addresse.	=He found out* the address.*
connaître	Tu connaissais mon voisin ?	=Did* you know my neighbour?*
	Tu as connu mon voisin ?	=Did* you meet my neighbour?*
pouvoir	Il ne pouvait pas sortir.	=He couldn't* go out (It was hard for him.).*
	Il n'a pas pu sortir.	=He couldn't* (and didn't) go out.*
vouloir	Je voulais partir.	=I wanted* to leave.*
	J'ai voulu partir.	=I tried* to leave.*
	Je ne voulais pas partir.	=I didn't want* to leave.*
	Je n'ai pas voulu partir.	=I refused* to leave*
avoir	Elle avait faim.	=She was* hungry.*
	Elle a eu faim.	=She got* hungry.*

　 $\mathrm{pouvoir}$ および $\mathrm{vouloir}$ の半過去形は、不定詞の行動が実際に生じたのか否かは明言していない。
