 今日勉強した英語の中で間違えたことや調べたことをメモしておく。

コロケーション

 今回は古沢寛行・小宮山浩光・レコード,カービィ(2004)「コロケーション徹底演習II」(泰文堂)PP. 145-7を参照。


 今回、間違えたのは以下の表現:

  877. She kept her head down in an effort to conceal her wet eyes. Hard as she tried, she just couldn't control her tears.
    彼女は涙で濡れた目を見せまいと俯いたままであった。しかしどんなに頑張ってみても、涙を抑えることができなかった。
  879. Deep coughing spasms shook the old man again. His tuberculosis had progressed too far for the antibiotic to be effective any more.
    老人はまた激しくせき込んだ。彼の結核は進行していて抗生物質が最早効かない状態だった。
  880. People crowded around to see the strange animal. He had never seen so many people in his life, much less in one place.
    その奇妙な動物を見ようと人々が群がっていた。彼は今までこんなに大勢の人を見たことが無かった。ましてや1か所でこんなに集まっているのは見たことが無かった。
  881. It was a tense moment. If he refused to see her, she would have no choice but to go back to her home.
    張り詰めた瞬間だった。もし彼女に会いたくないと言えば、彼女は家に帰らざるを得ないであろう。
  882. With the competitions over, the athletes had nothing to do until the ceremonies to be held later, and they were restless.
    競技が終わって、選手たちは後に開かれる表彰式まで何もやることが無かった。彼らは落ち着かなかった。
  884. While the priest sat on the tatami mat for long hours in what he called meditation, he often fell asleep.
    僧侶は、彼に言わせると「瞑想」の状態で長時間畳の上に座っている間にしばしば眠り込んでしまった。
  886. Until you have paid your current bill, we won't extend you any further credit.
    貴方様の現在のお勘定を御精算いただくまではもうこれ以上のツケを認めるわけには参りません。
  889. The car in which the President was riding was continually being stopped by the cheering crowds.
    大統領が乗っている車は、歓呼で迎える群衆により頻繁に停車していた。
  892. I'm sorry we couldn't get you a room in your regular hotel, but it had already filled up by the time we called.
    ごめん。いつものホテルに部屋が取れなくって。でも電話した時点でもうすでに満杯だったんだ。
  893. The meeting is scheduled for nine tomorrow morning, in the 5th floor conference room. You're expected to be there on time.
    会合は5階の会議室で明朝9時の予定です。時間通りに集合して下さい。

  Our young cat Min, which has been absent five cold nights - her first absence - has at length returned at daylight.
  私たちが飼っている若猫のミンは、寒い中を5晩も帰ってこなかった―こんなことはこれが初めてだ―が、とうとう今日の夜明けに帰ってきた。
  I said my prayers, a duty which I had often neglected, and in a little time fell into a really refreshing sleep.
  お祈りの務めは時折怠っていたが、私は祈りを唱えて、本当に元気を回復させてくれる眠りに落ちた。


6.3 例題   Man is one of the most adaptable of all living things, an honour with he perhaps shares with his constant companions, the dog and the housefly. Man can maintain himself as a population high in the mountains, or in arctic wastes, or in tropical jungles, or in desert desolation. Individually he has penetrated the depths of the ocean and the outer reaches of the atmosphere. Man is marvellously adaptable - except to man.
